New Jersey State Prison Overview

New Jersey Department of Corrections operates New Jersey State Prison as a maximum-security state facility in Trenton. It is physically in Mercer County, but it is not operated by Mercer County and is not searched through Mercer County Correction Center. The population is sentenced adult male prisoners in NJDOC custody. A person may have a Mercer County commitment or a Mercer County court history and still be housed at a prison outside the county, because NJDOC controls state-prison placement after sentencing.

NJDOC source figures for New Jersey State Prison vary because each report uses a different date or capacity context. Those state-prison numbers are not the same as the Mercer County jail population. They describe sentenced custody, statewide prison placement, and commitment data, not a live county roster.

New Jersey State Prison has a street address for the facility and a separate mailing address published in NJDOC materials. Use the facility phone for prison-specific contact and visitation scheduling extensions for visit appointments. Do not send county-jail OPRA requests or county property questions to the state prison unless the record or person is under NJDOC custody.

New Jersey State Prison Visits

NJDOC visitation rules apply at New Jersey State Prison. All visits are by appointment only, and visitors must be on the approved visit list. For New Jersey State Prison, visits must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance and no more than seven days in advance. Adults and minors need approval, and visitors must bring photo ID. Dress code and conduct rules are strict, and contraband, intoxication, security breaches, or undisclosed offender or parolee status can cancel or bar visits.

New Jersey State Prison Admission

New Jersey State Prison intake is not the same as street-arrest booking at Mercer County Correction Center. A state-prison admission follows conviction, sentencing, and NJDOC transfer or classification. NJDOC determines custody level, housing, facility assignment, program access, release and parole data, and any later transfer. The county of commitment field in a profile may show Mercer County even if the person is housed in another NJDOC prison.

If a person was just arrested in Mercer County, first check the county jail and court channels. If the person has already been sentenced to state custody, switch to NJDOC. If the case is federal or immigration-related, use the BOP or ICE locator instead. New Jersey State Prison does not serve as a general Mercer County arrest roster.

New Jersey State Prison Programs

New Jersey State Prison's maximum-security status affects access, schedules, and movement. New Jersey State Prison History

New Jersey State Prison opened in 1836 and is one of Mercer's most distinctive custody facilities because it is a major state prison in the county seat. The Office of Corrections Ombudsperson described the West Compound as the oldest operating prison facility in America in its 2025 inspection context. That history is separate from the Mercer County jail's 1892 work-camp origin, and it reinforces why Mercer County inmate searches can cross county and state systems.

The September 2025 Office of Corrections Ombudsperson inspection of the New Jersey State Prison West Compound reported severe aging-infrastructure concerns, including small cells, no hot water in cells, no air conditioning, limited dayroom or recreation space in housing units, and privacy problems. The office recommended demolition or replacement. NJDOC's September 2025 response said the department remained committed to infrastructure maintenance and replacement while citing budget, historic, and construction constraints.
